hi guys
well i want to buy a midi controller.
some of you might know my setup consists of a dell laptop and a tascam us-122. http://www.tascam.com/Products/US-122.html
i surfed around for a cheap midi controller and found this one: http://www.kijkshop.nl/product/15868/324/beeld_geluid/muziekinstrumenten/accessoires/miditech-midi-controller/
now i have 1 simple question. would it be possible (or even logical) to connect this controller via a simple midi in & out cable with my tascam.. or should i connect this controller DIRECTLY with my laptop using the usb port.

i am not much of a tech guy so hopefully someone can offer some input

What?... no knobs?... no trigger pads?... no sliders?... no transport buttons?
Unless I'm just not understanding what it's capable of doing, it seems more like just a KBoard than a controller. Unless that's all you want. Myself, I need my controller to be more tactile. I want to twist knobs, push buttons, tap pads. Get busy child... know what I mean?

The Tascam thingy looks pretty nice. Though you'd prob'ly want to connect your controller directly to your laptop via USB, if possible. Would prob'ly help eliminate some latency probs you might encounter.

Hmmmm...if you only want to play some keys, this could be OK...but only a ModWheel and a PichBendWheel wouldn't be enough for me....

yes - use the midi on the tascam - it will work just fine for your needs.
One thing you can also consider, is that almost any keyboard that supports midi can be used as your midi controller. The one I used for years and live is actually a cheap 'home' keyboard with only 4 sounds. I took out the insides that dealt with the sound out of it(to make it lighter), and used it as a controller. I paid $30 and it has 61 full-size keys. So - look for used equipment, even cheap keyboards - as they'll work just fine.

ahaa thanks for the input guys
maybe midi controller was the wrong word.
the only thing i want is.. like.. say i have a sample of a bell.. (or xylophone) then i want to play a melody with keys
i do have a HUGE keyboard that can be connected..
i just need something smaller.
ModWheel and a PichBendWheel .. hehe i hardly know what they are.. ;)
heheh Gideon's story cracks me up.. you are a handy guy.. 61 keys, nice
but A Bit Crusher's last point might be the best one.. the velocity would be nice..
i'll think about it some more. maybe i'll buy it anyway, but that would be kind of decadent maybe

hey a bit crusher (i think your name's roland or ronald.. roland would be cooler though)
anyway, look at this: http://www.musicallin.nl/online_winkel/computer_en_muziek/keyboard_midi_controllers/maudio_keystation_49
would this be a better choice, or maybe there's hardly any difference. i see they got a lot of stuff in that shop... this m-audio looks more promising than buying something at the f**** kijkshop

I have been using a old yamaha CS1x for years now as my main controller. Got it at a pawn shop for 125. I just bought a novation X-station25 for all the knobs and the keys are like butter. Novation remote series are great controllers also.
And no I dont work for novation

Hey Ludo, this looks like a very good offer and the keyboard IS velocity sensitive...I wouldn't buy one without that feature....
Greetings, Roland (Which is a cool name, indeed!!!)

well every story needs an end. (so i'll provide it) yeah the m-audio thingie arrived, looks great.. a lil' bigger than i expected. anyway, connected it with usb AND midi.. and now it's working in fruityloops. it came with Ableton which i just installed.. err Ableton Lite or something.. anyway, i need to read a manual i guess, cause i couldn't get a sound out of it.. except for a demo song, which was semi-working, because it used so many options, if i would fully enjoy it i had to ........... UPGRADE. yeah of course.. commercials commercials
