While enjoying a tranquil moment in a mountain cabin with my wife, I heard a crash outside.
I ran out and found glass on the road, and a few people gathered around a guy fighting my brother-in-law. The guy had my brother-in-law by the neck on the ground. Seconds later, I broke the fight up 
Unfortunately, my thumb was smashed in the process. nice...

It really was a bizzare thing that happened. We have been staying at these cabins for over 30 years and have never had so much as a rude look from anyone, but this year was a little different.  It was Friday night, everyone was still recovering from the Thanksgiving meal the day before. Gideon, Miles and I were relaxing in front of the fireplace in our cabin when we heard the crash and breaking glass. Gideon was up and out the door before I even had a chance to react. I picked up Miles and watched everything from the safe distance of our cabin doorway. Apparently my sister and brother-in-law were walking back to their cabin after visiting with my folks for awhile. They walked past another cabin full of folks who had two dogs that were not on leashes. The dogs bolted out of the cabin's open door and were barking at my sister's dogs. My B-I-L asked them to please grab their dogs and leash them. They told them 'no...walk around them!' and laughed.  This was not cool. The dogs got upset, the people got mad and next thing you know my sister was shoved and was on the ground! The bottle of wine they were carrying crashed, the dogs took off running into the dark woods and fists started flying!  When Gideon got there he found B-I-L trapped in a headlock with my sister beating the guy over the head. Even after Gideon got the guys separated they still kept trying to fight...communication was limited to foul words...and the night management was called.
In the end it all worked out. The dogs ran back to my parent's cabin, my B-I-L had just a few scrapes and bruises, my sister got in a few good hits, and Gideon has a nice purple thumb to help him remember the adventure. 
The next day we were told by management that the family who had started the fight had been banned from the cabins and would never be allowed to come back. Our family, however, were invited back for next year. We'll see. I know it doesn't sound like a big deal, but it really affected us all. That is a place where we have always gone to relax, unwind, and get away from the general anger and anxiety that society seems to have in abundance. I think I will always feel a little different about those cabins now. 
But BOY was Gideon brave!

hehe. Good job Gid. Talk about your bad case of no mase- there are so many people out there just like that. The attitude of 'we don't care because we're cooler than you' kind of thing. That's actually I think why I was fired from my last job because I had a few problems with no respect from certain others. I like to keep it realz~ I prolly would've been fighting at your family picnic too.
just kiddin. It's all about being passive aggressive and 'walking by'. (then getting a shrink) I hope the B-I-L is doing okay too. If someone pushed some of my family on the ground I would probably pull out an "imaginary weapon".
Just holding your hand up with nothing in it usually breaks up a fight- I've seen it done. Also, if you can learn the names of the people and call out to them to quit; that works great because it makes them wonder 'how does that person know my name' taking their minds off the rage. I know, all this advice after it actually happens doesn't work out too well when you're tapping your swore thumb, but hey- future reference.

yeah - thumb's up generally means "cool, right on, i approve, go for it, good"
the thumb is getting better - i have about 50% mobility.
It tends to hurt when it gets bumped. Right now i'm in that itchy stage, probably due to the stretching of the skin.

Only now did I see this... It is too bad that you guys had to face this damn bad experience!
Gideon, how is your thumb now? And, more important I think, how is your mood? It is difficult for somebody with such a kind and social (I think) attitude/behaviour facing such a case. The aftermath of it.
Lou, of course you should keep going to the camp and I am sure everybody there want you to be there again.

We are all doing much better now. Gideon can almost rock out on his guitar  and we have made reservations for next year...although in a slightly different part of the camp. Next year we will be off to the edges more, not in the middle of everyone. Thanks for caring!
