cat and mouse

our cat likes to hunt. last night was particularly creepy because of the eerie, warm wind that was whipping up, and all the cows just mooed and honked and yelled all night. it was time for bed and we didn't want the kitty to be outside all night again so we walked around outside, calling a bit, trying to catch her eyes glowing in the flashlight. ah yes, there she is, over by the compost pile, probably mousing.

she came limping across the yard towards us. I got a little worried. did she get stepped on by a cow? as she came closer, we saw that she had something in her mouth. was she injured in the hunt? oh wait - I see - the catch is too big to carry in her mouth alone (or, it was still struggling and she needed to restrain it while she proudly brought it to us). here she comes, hopping on one front paw, giant mouse in the other paw and mouth.

needless to say, we just left her out all night.

Ah, she's a good provider I see. Dinner for everyone.

Very Happy

Good lord, Man! That's not a mouse...it's a marmot! Laughing Actually looks more like a small rat. We have those here, too. They like the wood pile and the compost (when we had it). Now they just dine on my fresh tomatoes...and of course wait until they're ripe! The buggers! I guess we need a 'Night Patrolling Nija Kitty' too. Twisted Evil If only Gideon were not allergic.

GREAT photos! Cool, right on.

I just got this visual of Lou sittin' on the back porch, .22 cradled in 'er arms waitin' for Marmots to try stealin' her tomatoes....

Laughing

No marmots here... but we do have a lot of groundhogs. I should know, I've run over a number of 'em on the way home from work. Don't see 'em at night, but they come out in the early AM lookin' for breakfast. Damn things just waddle out onto the road and... wump... that's it. Sad

My grandma calls'em ground squirrels. Smile

Twisted Evil Yeah! How did you know?

Nope...that's not what I do. Wink Although I did get my first .22 when I was four. It even has my initials burned into the stock. My dad and I refinished it together. Cool memories...but the rule was (and still is) 'NEVER point it at anything alive.' However, the time I came outside and found a large wood rat having what seriously looked like a picnic in my garden, I was a little upset. They especially seem to like the heirlooms. What can I say? They have good taste. Laughing

And as far as marmots are concerned, I adore them! The first time I saw a yellow-bellied marmot I fell in love. I think I was 16 years old and was visiting family in Northern California. I went home and looked 'marmot' up in a wildlife book. I discovered they mostly eat, mate and sunbathe...and then when it's cold, they hibernate. Yes! Sign me up! I want to be a marmot! And I still feel that way... Cool, right on.

Sounds like my wife's description of me....

Ummm... what?

Laughing

I wish......

My favorite woodland creature is definitely the Red Fox. A lotta peeps round here (chicken farmers) don't like 'em. But I think they're beautiful. I always feel heart-broken when I see one has been run over on the highway.

There's a major problem with skunks here. Too many of 'em and they carry rabies. The MNR (ministry of natural resources) have been dropping (from airplanes) a lot of feed pellets (out in the country side not in the city) lately that have been laced with a rabies vaccine to help stop the spread of... well... rabies. Hope it works.

cheers

ya'll rule.

re: .22 - I'll bet that varments in the garden have made a gun-tote'n person out of many a gardener. last fall when deer or rabbit or groundhog...whichever it was...chewed down our entire early winter beds of broccoli, kale, and others, Erika was like "now I understand why people sit on their back porches with shotguns." haha.

Ahh Farmlife Very Happy

Well my tales of presents given to us by pets while living on a farm are slightly more grisly.

The dogs would always go off on a long morning romp and more often than not would bring us back something, usually in the form of a groundhog head, which they would then spend their day happily gnawing.

We had tons of barn cats, all begotten from one we called Momma Grey. Doof, keep an eye on your cat, we lost one when it climbed up into someones car engine to keep warm. My buddy walked out to his truck one morning started it up and there was this horrible whap, bang, womp sound from under the hood. He lifted the hood to be engulfed in a cloud of fur and found the cat we dubbed Vinny Van Go inside with his stomach sliced open from then cooling fan.Crying or Very sad
