S. A. Fred - "Encounters"
Created on: 11/21/09 04:04 AM Replies: 3

Hi guys,
Thought I'd drop in and post an update, (intended on posting this last week after I uploaded my last 5 "Encounter" tracks)... but, what with one thing and another, didn't happen!
So, firstly, on the music side, recently I've had something of a creative resurgence! Which is good, so much so I've practically bombed AS with tracks the past 4months, doing 5 a month Smile My main intention with this has been to just explore ideas, sounds, styles, and not be too concerned with getting hung up on super production values, perfect arrangement, mastering quality etc, etc. (I did endeavour to get quality to a point where I thought..."thats good enough") For me, this has been quite liberating to be honest, it gave me freedom to really explore with sounds. Sound is noteworthy here, as I played very little on these tracks, these have been more assemblies of loops from my sample library, and from my previous tracks. An exercise in sound design more than anything.
Another important element has been the use of "AudioMulch". A rather nifty little node based program which I'm sure many of you are aware of, relatively cheap, but quite powerful. I have mentioned it before. I still have a lot to explore with this program, but recently I have been using its "Metasurface" feature to arrange tracks "live", or on the fly. AM, allows you to create snapshots of your track, which you can then move between in a node based fashion in the "Metasurface" editor. This feature has probably been the most liberating, it kind of puts you back in touch with the flow of the music, so it gets arranged a bit more organically. (obviously, we all have different ways of working, whats good for one, isn't good for another
Smile)
So, the result of all this has been 20 tracks! (I called them "Encounters", as the first few had some granulated samples from people talking about UFO encounters... then the title just stuck). They are a mixture, some are better than others, a few I really like, but I'm happy with all of them.

Here's my site link if you fancy dipping in

BTW, I actually think there might be something to this UFO thing.... Wink

Keep those tracks coming!

Cool, right on.

Wow, that's a lot of new tracks! I love somewhat unplanned ideas like this - think of something and let the music roll.
Audiomulch is good stuff, I haven't used it in a long while so I have no idea how advanced the latest version is, but there are some nice sounds coming out of it here.
Haven't had time to listen to all of them yet, but what I'm hearing so far I like. 01 is excellent, I was listening to some of FSOL's From The Archives material before this and it flowed perfectly from that - same dark, sinister atmosphere as many of those pieces. 03 is nice but a little too much reverb for my liking, on the drums at least.
Yes, I'm digging the slightly menacing feel to a lot of this. The synths in 06 are very pretty too. I'll dip into some more of these later on, but all in all I'm enjoying them, they certainly sound more than sketches even if a couple are rough around the edges. Cool, right on.
Drug use for children has for many an education and with obvious alarm to both parents on the increase almost yearly.

I see the FSOL comparison, it is almost a random juxtaposition of elements, a strong influence methinks Smile
They are very much sketches, and some are rougher than others. Audiomulch is pretty much the same as its always been, just a bit nicer interface...but essentially the same thing.
The darkness, and moodiness, is something that pretty much remained constant... the dubby themes and vibes are getting stronger as well now Smile
