I signed up to Emusic.com in 2004 - since then, I've been growing a massive collection of music including hard to find albums, independent artists, classic/well known artists and everything between. When I run out of artists I know of, I always seem to find new ones I've never heard of.
So what is the actual deal? Every month, I pay $19.99, and I'm allowed 90 mp3s - no DRM, and the files are usually VBR quality. As long as I am a member, I can even 're-download' the files if I loose them!
You can hit their site and try it out. Or msg me with your email address, and I'll use their 'tell a friend' option - which gives you 50 free mp3s and if you happen to sign up, they'll give me an additional 50 
Today I'll listen though all 90 new mp3s I downloaded yesterday - in all, 7hrs and 32min of MUSIC!

I joined Emusic ages ago...basically to get hold of Pole on your recommendation
I really enjoyed it for a while, and yes even when you run out of stuff you know to download, you discover a whole load of new music to broaden your horizon's. I discovered Proem, Isan, Casino Versus Japan, Mr Projectile, to name a few of my fav's. So yes Emusic is cool
However for me, I canceled my subscription because I felt that I was getting bored of the new music I was getting hold of too quickly....I constantly need to download new music all the time...I felt it was sort of reducing the worth of the music. Its a bit addictive, the more you do it, the effect lessens and you need to do it more kind of thing to feel good. Maybe that says more about my personality than anything I guess
I've been considering subscribing again, but haven't got around to it...the other thing is...my IPod is full! So there isn't the same sort of impetus because I need to take stuff off...to put stuff on.

Cripes, I don't have time for 90 more tracks a month.
I have a hard enough time getting around to listening to podcasts of radio shows that play my stuff!
