The world's attention is much more distributed across the Web each month it seems. With sites like YouTube.com, Facebook.com, MySpace.com, and several 100 other social sites, it has become more and more difficult to sustain a smaller community. People want to be where everyone else is, which is nothing new.
For example, Jamendo.com, a site we are often listed along with in blogs because we are both heavily support Creative Commons licensing, has 542,871 members, 30 full time employees, and 14 people doing language translations. Nine of those employees do Marketing and Business Development. With a work force like that behind the site, it's very difficult for us to complete when we have zero full time employees. According to Compete.com, in the last month, they've grown 860%, whereas we have shrunk by 6.93%.
I'm sure we would do much better with 44 people working for the site and a multi million dollar investment like Jamendo has received from a venture capital company. While we don't have that massive advantage, we have survived since our launch in 2001, and continue to provide great services to nearly 7,000 artists and 15,000 registered music fans all with no staff, no funding, and very little revenue.
I'm feeling positive about the future, and see this place growing and surviving for many years to come. I appreciate all of you that have remained here all these years, and especially those of you who help pay the bills by upgrading your accounts.
Keep the faith, spread the word, and create the future you want to see. Maybe we can organize a sign-up drive, see who can get the most new members on the site for a prize.
Kylo... Lou and I are sooooo happy for you I hope she sees that you are one awesome catch.
ABC - I'll try to post more and interact with everyone more, I know I've been missing in action for some time now.

Yep, although this isn't always a good thing, sometimes the crowd becomes too big (for my taste)

Hi Swerve Tweeter - that's good to hear - oh, and thank you for posting some reviews lately. It's great to see feedback being posted on the site.
Now if we could just get at least 75 more artists to upgrade their accounts, I'd finally get the hosting and bandwidth fees covered on a monthly basis. I still have to cover half of the costs to keep everything online, which isn't fun when you consider that I do the work fore free. Getting people to upgrade isn't easy when the majority of my competition offers all their services for free. I think the answer to the problem is seeking a sponsorship with a few companies who want to reach our demographic.

I fully agree. The web is oversaturated with free space and there's no way to compete so the only obvious answer is sponsorship. Otherwise this site may not survive and that would really suck.

I just wanted to add... that ever since this thread went up, we've been seeing more traffic to the site and our 'Alexa' ranking (which is more of an indicator than a real rank), has improved by more than 3,000. Not bad!
