Hi all, this looks very interesting....
I read about it in an article in the newspaper today...is this the future for musicians and their fans?

Musicians have fans? o_O

Actually it looks promising. But then I want it to look promising.

While it does sound interesting, I don't think it's a great idea.

I don't like the terms (see faq below), and I have a feeling that process of transfering the rights back to the artists at the end of 12months won't be as smooth as the artist would like.

Most people could launch a indie record label with 3-4 artsits on it for $50K.

How many will 'make it' this year? Two bands? Five? What do you think?

Here's some info from their FAQ:
==========================

What happens to my publishing income?

The publishing income of the songs you record with SellaBand will be divided between you, SellaBand, producer and A&R manager, in the following way: You 60%, SellaBand 30%, Producer 5%, A&R manager 5%

Who owns the master of the recording?

For the first 12 months after the recording is finished SellaBand will own the master, after that you the artist will get it and can do with whatever you want.

For how long will my songs be available as free downloads?

Your songs will be available on the SellaBand Download Portal for at least 12 months.

Can we name our sponsors in the artwork of the CD?

In the artwork there's room for 'thank you's' to all your supporters, but also to companies that have helped you so far in your career. But please note it's not allowed to place logos of brands or companies in the artwork.

Yes, that's right, but do most people have $50K to spend??

I don't know, but how many people 'make it' on their own?

meaning, I'd ask them how long it will take, what is the exact steps that are taken before getting involved.

Presumably it's all spelled out somewhere. I don't think anyone savvy would sign up to an ambiguous agreement?

I think you didn't get my emphasis on 'make it' - by making it, you'd need to get $50,000 worth of points assigned to you - then you can do the recording, etc.

In some ways, they are simply a record label that understand that most artists are going to make it big for a short time - that there are millions out there trying - and that they can use the general public to do the filtering and basic funding for them.

In that respect, it's a very interesting idea - but I'm also someone who tells people that they should never sign a contract with a label - unless it states you fully own your music.

To answer your question, as to how many people make it on their own, I'd say it depends on peoples definition of "making it." I think on average, the definition is changing - mainly due to people realizing that they don't need a record contract to make it. Some people define making it by record sales, some by the number of sellout concerts, and others by the number of friends they have at MySpace.

How many unsigned artists will be able to spend 50K on recording an album this year on their own? Maybe 2-3, maybe less. So is this a good opportunity? Sure, definately.

Are you signing up?

yeah it makes me feel sceptical too.

iirc the article also talked about myspace getting too crowded.. and of course i immediately thought "hurray artistserver will florish!"

(interestingly though, the article went on about new "myspaces" which focused on 1 genre.. like........ electronica!!)

i know what danny k would say about that Razz

Not at this moment...I'm glad I didn't sign a contract a while ago with....you know....
This would have made it impossible for me to release something for a period of 4 years...(about 2 years from now on).

But I still think the idea is very cool, and the contract they're talking about is for 1 CD only...you're not stuck with them for 10 years......

Is a site like that going to be interested in non-vocal IDM kinda tracks?

I don't know, but it's not the site which decides what the musiclovers like to hear....

At this moment I can't find any experimental/IDM band, but this might change in the future off course......

For me... personally... I don't need anything else but Artistserver. It fills all my needs and garners me plenty of attention. My page here has been the perfect vehicle for showcasing my music which has, in turn, led to many business contacts, projects where my music has been used and invitations to perform in places I could only dream of in the past. I certainly don't make a living off my music, but the money and recognition I do get is encouraging enough to cause me to want to continue riding the wave 'til the offers stop comin' in.

It may not always work out that way for everybody (everyone's skills and areas of interest vary greatly) but with a little research and some hard work it will pay off.

Keep on keepin' on....

cheers

Off course it depends on your musical intentions whether you join sellaband.com or not...

Personally I'd still like to release something in the form of a CD or even vinyl...

Of course you do.

What are you doing (besides contemplating sellabrand) to get yourself heard/noticed?

Are you sticking with just the internet route or do you promote offline?

Do you do shows?

Are you part of any sort of artistic community other than what you find on the internet?

Do you associate with any other musicians in your area?

At the moment I'm only releasing tracks on the Internet......and I am doing this alone...
I do have plans to release something this year, and yes, it'll probably be a VINYL-release, because I love VINYL.....
