Learn how to create a Station and Playlist on AS
Created on: 02/27/07 08:31 AM Replies: 8

A new user sent me an email last night asking how to create a playlist.

I know I need to simplify the process of creating a station and playlist, so if any of you have any suggestions, let me know. Part of the complexity, comes from the fact that we have 'stations and playlists' and not just playlists.

To help you all with the process, I just made a tutorial that walks you through the steps.

I'm rather inexperienced with podcast software but I have this thing called iTunes and I hear its supposed to do that podcast thing, but when I try to subscribe to a podcast, I copy that url you supply and paste it into the url window that is in the "Advanced" menu (which by the way Apple should not be under "advanced" area of computer use as after all its called Real *Simple* Syndication) in iTunes and when I submit I get an error message "... (url submitted)...does not seem to be a valid Podcast URL". This url is formed pointing to a cfm (playlist_rss) script... am I missing something here?

I just ran a few feeds through a validator, identified the issues, and fixed it. You should be ready to go w/ podcast feeds now. Smile

be sure to check if iTunes has a setting for multiple enclosures. I don't recall if they have their set to default to only grab the most recent. Some podcasting apps do that by default, which could cause only 1 file out of the playlist to be pulled down.

No, still doesn't work for me in iTunes. No problem with NetNewsWire though. May be a somewhat common problem though seeing as how NetNewsWire has a 'Download to iTunes' option button within it.

bummber - it is a valid feed, so iTunes should be cool with it. I'll have to try it out on my mac and see if I can isolate the issue.

what is the URL you are using?

i think it's just something in that feed - I see where the feed validator is choking on a character in the description in the songs on that audiofeed/podcast - I should have this fixed in a few.

Yep - he has a "©" symbol in there - which needs to be stripped out or replaced w/ a code equiv. Since there are so many characters that can do this - I may have to strip all non-standard characters out altogether instead of replacing - or I can URL encode them - but that doesn't work out on some feed readers.

more news soon...

ok - that feed now validates - and the odd chars are converted to html entities so they're still there.

When you get some time, could you try it with iTunes once again?
